Australia & New Zealand Travel FAQs

Doing both together is the most common request we get and the one most often planned badly. They are not neighbours in any practical sense — Auckland to Sydney is three and a half hours, the entry systems differ, and their best months do not line up. These are the questions we answer most.

  • Minimum trip length: three weeks for both countries at a reasonable pace
  • Two sets of paperwork: Australia’s ETA or eVisitor, plus New Zealand’s NZeTA and a NZ$100 visitor levy
  • The seasons fight each other: tropical Australia wants May to October, which is New Zealand’s cold half
  • Best compromise windows: late September into November, or March into early May
  • Biosecurity is strict: New Zealand fines start at NZ$400, and hiking boots must be declared

How Long the Trip Needs

What is the minimum time for both Australia and New Zealand?

Three weeks, and four is where it stops feeling like a schedule. Each country carries a fortnight on its own, and the trans-Tasman flight plus internal legs costs close to two days — so a two-week combined trip leaves roughly eleven usable days. With less than three weeks, we would build one country properly.

How should we split the time?

Rarely evenly. Australia is a continent and the internal distances are the real cost — Sydney to Perth alone is five hours in the air. New Zealand is small enough to hold three or four bases and drive between them. A common shape is twelve nights in Australia, then nine or ten in New Zealand on one island.

Which country should we do first?

Usually Australia. The long-haul flight lands there, Sydney is a gentle first few days, and it puts the reef and the Red Centre in front of you while you are freshest. We reverse it when your dates give New Zealand the better weather.

Flights and Getting Between Them

How long is the flight between Australia and New Zealand?

Auckland to Sydney is about three and a half hours, and Christchurch and Wellington are similar.

Can we fly straight into Queenstown from Australia?

From four Australian cities only — Melbourne, Sydney, the Gold Coast and Brisbane, and the Brisbane service is seasonal, running roughly June to October. Everywhere else routes through Auckland or Christchurch. Queenstown has no international services outside Australia at all, so this is worth knowing before you plan a route that assumes otherwise.

How much internal flying should we expect?

In Australia, more than you would like — it is the size of the continental United States. We cap it at one long leg per country with a recovery night either side. In New Zealand, Auckland to Queenstown is under two hours and a good itinerary drives rather than flies.

Visas and Entry

Do we need separate visas for each country?

Yes, two separate systems. For Australia it is either the Electronic Travel Authority, subclass 601, or the eVisitor 651, depending on which passport you hold. American passport holders use the ETA, applied for through Australia’s own app for AUD 20. For New Zealand it is an NZeTA — NZ$17 through the app or NZ$23 online — plus the NZ$100 International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy, paid at the same time. Allow 72 hours for the NZeTA.

Is there anything else to complete before flying?

New Zealand requires the NZ Traveller Declaration from everyone. It is free, digital, and can be submitted from 24 hours before your journey begins. Australia still uses a paper Incoming Passenger Card on arrival for most travellers.

Do Australians need anything for New Zealand?

Australian citizens need neither an NZeTA nor the levy. Australian permanent residents do need both, which catches people out regularly. New Zealand citizens travelling to Australia are granted a Special Category visa on arrival, free of charge.

How long does the passport need to be valid?

The two countries differ. Australia asks only that your passport be valid at the time of entry. New Zealand wants it valid for three months beyond your intended departure. Work to the New Zealand rule and you satisfy both.

Weather and Timing

When should we go if we want both countries at their best?

Late September into November, or March into early May. This is the genuine planning tension of a combined trip and it is worth understanding rather than working around. Australia’s cyclone season runs 1 November to 30 April and the tropical north’s wet arrives from late October, so the reef, the Kimberley and the Top End want May to October — which is exactly New Zealand’s cold half. The shoulder months are the only windows that serve both without asking you to pack for two different trips.

How different is the weather between them?

More than people expect, in the same week. In July, Cairns averages a daily maximum near 26°C while Queenstown’s typical highs sit between 3 and 11. Sydney and Auckland, by contrast, are within about two degrees of each other in both January and July — which is why Sydney makes a natural hinge between the two halves.

What about school holidays?

Both fill up. Australian dates vary by state and diverge more than visitors expect; New Zealand runs four national breaks, the long one over Christmas and January. Domestic travel is heavy then, so reef boats fill and lodge rates climb.

Practicalities

What is the time difference between them?

New Zealand runs two hours ahead of Sydney and Melbourne for most of the year. There is one week to watch — New Zealand’s daylight saving begins in late September while the Australian states start in early October, so for that week the gap is three hours rather than two. Queensland, Western Australia and the Northern Territory do not observe daylight saving at all.

Is there anything we should not pack?

New Zealand’s biosecurity rules are strict, with an instant NZ$400 infringement fine. All food must be declared, cooked or not. Hiking boots, tents and sports equipment are a listed risk category because of soil, so clean your walking shoes before you fly. Australia also requires food, plant and animal products to be declared.

Two currencies, two power plugs?

Two currencies — the Australian and New Zealand dollars, which are not interchangeable and trade at different rates. The plug is the one thing that is the same: both countries use the same Type I socket, so a single adapter covers the trip.
